The Utica Jr. Comets organization is excited to announce that the window is officially OPEN for coaching applications for the 2026-2027 season!
Coaches are the cornerstone of our organization. They are extremely important to the health and success of our teams, directly shaping the development, character, and experience of our young athletes. We are committed to ensuring that anyone interested in contributing their skills and passion gets a fair opportunity to apply.

UJRC Head Coach Selection Policy:
The Utica Junior Comets are committed to providing a high-quality hockey experience for all participants. A critical component of this commitment is the selection of qualified and dedicated Head Coaches who foster a positive and developmental environment.
The Utica Junior Comets value the following qualities in head coaches:
Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with prior coaching experience, particularly at the youth hockey level.
Hockey Knowledge: A strong understanding of hockey fundamentals, skills, and strategies.
Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with players, parents, and head coaches.
Commitment to Player Development: Dedication to fostering a positive and growth-oriented environment for all players.
Sportsmanship and Respect: Modeling and promoting fair play, respect for officials, opponents, and teammates.
USA Hockey Certification: All coaches must be registered with USA Hockey and have completed the required coaching certifications for their respective age level.
Background Check: All coaches will be subject to a background check to ensure the safety and well-being of our players.
Procedure:
Application Submission: All interested candidates must submit their interest through the coaching form and will be asked to provide the following:
Coaching experience
Relevant certifications
References
Coaching philosophy statement
Initial Screening: The Utica Jr Comets Coaching Committee will review all applications and conduct an initial screening. The coaching committee will be made up of Hockey Coaches at the highest level of the organization.
Interviews: Qualified candidates will be invited for an interview with the Committee. Interviews will focus on:
Coaching experience and knowledge
Communication and leadership skills
Understanding of player development
Alignment with the organization's values and Mission Statement
If a candidate has coached previously - a review of that team will be completed using internal and external information to ensure alignment with organizations values and its Mission.
Reference Checks: The Committee will contact the provided references for shortlisted candidates.
Decision and Notification: The Committee will make a final decision based on the candidate's qualifications, interview performance, and reference checks. All candidates will be notified of the decision.

Transparency: The selection process will be open and transparent, with clear criteria communicated to all applicants.
Fairness: All candidates will be evaluated fairly and objectively based on their qualifications and experience.
Player Focus: The primary consideration in all coaching decisions is the best interests of the players.
Continuous Improvement: The Coaching Committee will regularly review and update the selection process to ensure its effectiveness.
