In March 2018, the Syracuse Stars announced the relocation of three teams to the Utica area. In March of 2019The various teams include: NCDC Tuition free, Premier Juniors, and U-18 Tier 1 Midget. The Utica Jr. Comets are members of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL), the largest Junior and Midget league in the United States. The USPHL places hundreds of players into the ranks of NCAA hockey annually. The NCDC level represents the highest level of junior hockey ever played in Central New York.

The 2020-21 season will mark the 35th season of the former Syracuse Stars. The franchise is the oldest Junior Hockey organization in the United States, still operated by original ownership. A few notable alumni of the Syracuse Stars include: Robert Esche, Dustin Brown, Brian Gionta; Ryan Callahan; Tim Connolly; Matt Murley; Robbie Schremp; Tim Sestito; Tom Sestito; Colby Cohen; Jeremy Morin, are just a few of our notable Stars . In total, over $200 million raised in pro contracts and college scholarships.

The Utica Jr. Comets will feature four teams this upcoming 2020-21 season: NCDC Tuition free Junior, Premier Juniors, U-18 AAA, and U-16 AAA. The Jr. Comets now have the entire ladder in place so that local players may remain at home and reach their collegiate and professional hockey goals. We will draw players in from all over the world. We are seeking local CNY families looking to get involved and support to host players for this upcoming 2020-21 hockey season.

Host families play a large role in the success of the organization by opening up their homes to players from all over the United States and beyond. Players pay a billeting fee to their host families to cover all of their expenses. Our players range in age from 15-20.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of helping these driven student-athletes relocate to Central New York. If you are interested in hosting a player, please contact, Nicole Kirnan Kelly at nicolekelly@uticajrcomets.org.

Dear Prospective Host Family,

Thank you for expressing interest in becoming a Utica Jr. Comets Hockey Club “Host Family.” We are looking forward to the upcoming season and your contribution to our program as a potential host family plays an important role in the Stars having a successful season. We thank you for your enthusiasm and interest in our program.

These elite athletes, who range from age 15 to 20, are recruited from across the United States, Canada and Europe to continue their education and hockey careers through comprehensive training and high-caliber competition on the ice while developing into well-rounded individuals off the ice as they pursue their dreams of obtaining an NCAA scholarship or advancing to professional hockey. They require a caring, comfortable, clean and safe environment that will nurture their development as outstanding hockey players and positive role models in the community.

Those families interested should:

  • Have a balanced, family-oriented lifestyle
  • Live in the Utica area
  • Desire to support the Stars organization
  • Have experience with and understanding of teenagers

Our players will arrive in mid August and will be here until mid spring. We have team guidelines and policies that our players must abide by while with our organization and we will do everything possible to make sure that this experience is a rewarding one for both the player and the Host Family.

Please complete the application and return it to us if you are interested in housing a player.

After we receive all applications, we will make our selections and will follow up with one-on-one interviews and in-home visits. We hope to have all housing selections made and all players placed by the end of July. Please email the application to nicolekelly@uticajrcomets.org.

If you have any additional questions please contact us at (914) 299-3831.
